Lt. j.g. Newburg was born Sept. 19, 1980, in Okinawa, Japan to Dr. Yvonne (Terry) Dietrich and Dennis Geer. He married Amy Downs on July 9, 2005, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at University of Notre Dame in South Bend,Ind. He graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind., and the University of Notre Dame in 2003. He was a member of the Notre Dame rock climbing and rodeo clubs and was captain and president of the boxing team, winning three Bengal Bouts titles in four years.

After graduation, he was commissioned into the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Kings Bay, Ga. aboard the USS Maryland. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Strategic Deterrent Patrol with one gold star. He was involved with the U.S.A. Triathlon Team.

Survivors are his wife, Amy; his mother, Dr. Yvonne (Terry) Dietrich, formerly of Standard; his father, Dennis Geer; two brothers, Christopher Neiss and Joseph Newburg; two sisters, Stephanie Newburg and Shannon Demore; grandparents Gene and Shirley Terry of Standard; and aunts, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandfather.
